Are You a Grungy Gardener? →
I don’t know who this woman is, and I hate the term “grungy” attached to anything but the music of my youth. That said, this article perfectly describes my style of gardening.

Today By Billy Collins →
I have just fallen so deeply in love with this poem. I wish so badly I was up at the house, smelling the peonies and digging my toes into the grass.

So if you’re in the New York City-area and need to see some beauty (but insist on staying out of the rain) you could do worse than hit up Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra this weekend. We worked really hard to put this show together, and it’s beautiful. So grab your camera and head up to the Bronx. Tweet your images to @nybg or add them to our Flickr group. I’ll be...

And then I looked down, and there were fish! Beautiful fish! Who were acting like hungry dogs, sticking their heads above water, begging for treats.

I had never been in the Conservatory Courtyard until today. Since I began working here, it has been closed for one reason or another, so when I got out there I was dazzled by all the amazing reflections everywhere.

Confession time: I think people who argue about hamburgers are idiots.

At Nice Matin, a Wine List That Hits All the Marks →
I’m so surprised by this. I have never even thought twice about eating at this restaurant in my neighborhood because there was something so generic about its exterior. Apparently that old adage is true: You should never judge a book—or for that matter a restaurant—by it’s cover.

Among the names considered were the Palisades Bridge, the Fort Lee Bridge, the...
– Possible other names for the GWB on Ephemeral New York. Although I think the Hudson River Bridge is the best of the lot, the George Washington Bridge is definitely a lot better than some of the contenders.

Today is the day that, in 1647, Peter Stuyvesant arrived in New Amsterdam to become the Director-General of New Netherland. I wonder if anyone back then could have ever guessed that such a (purportedly) grumpy, peg-legged man could so affect the course of history?

Some Cheese With Your Cheese, Perhaps?
I’m dying over this Swiss cheese sandwich that someone on one of David Lebovitz’s tours was served for lunch. It’s especially funny because she was hoping for something “light.” Not quite, honey.
But, I honestly think I can top this sandwich with one I had four year ago at a Slovakian restaurant in Brooklyn.
Yep. That’s right. You’re looking at a...

I love my Canon G9, but now that it’s on its second round of repairs in under six months, I think it might be time to retire the old girl. Anyone have any suggestions fo an adequate replacement?

This is great news! The Central Park Mounted Auxiliary Unit is a very cool example of citizen policing that really works. I can’t wait to see their amazing draft horses in the Park again. Long overdue.

Cake in the Mail →
I had absolutely no idea that there was (is!) a tradition that involves sending pieces of one’s wedding cake to guests who couldn’t attend the wedding. I also cannot believe that a piece of cake from Queen Victoria’s wedding still exists. That’s just crazy.

Eating Like the Rest of America
When I worked in Manhattan, I always had trouble deciding what to have for lunch. The choices were endless, bounded only by how long I wanted to wait, how far I wanted to walk or how much I wanted to spend. I could also pick up a gazillion different types of vegetables on my lunch hour at an endless array of farmer’s markets, grocery stores, and bodegas.
These days, though, I’m...

Thoroughbred vs. Pure Bred
Since the Kentucky Derby is nearly upon us, and everyone’s got pony fever I thought I’d take a minute to clear up one of my favorite grammatical pet peeves: People using the term “Thoroughbred” when they really should be using the term “Pure Bred.”
Thoroughbred (capital T) should only be used to refer to the breed of horse called a Thoroughbred. Thoroughbreds...

The Old Chatham Country Store
We had dinner at the Old Chatham Country Store on Saturday. It was an odd choice for me, because, honestly, I kind of hate the place. Whenever you go in there on the weekends to grab a quick sandwich or baking soda or a cup of tea and a cookie, they place is so filled with hostility (both from the staff and from the customers) that it makes the hair on my arms stand on end. But I figured,...

Osama Bin Laden Is Dead: Twitter Laughs at the... →
They missed my favorite from @petersagal
I’m only going to worry about tonight’s sudden POTUS speech if the President is played by Morgan Freeman.
theatlantic:
But as news leaked out about the death of Osama bin Laden on Sunday, humor was embraced. Here, a look at how celebrities and non-celebrities alike tried to make light of the terrorist’s demise.
See the other...
